Breast Ultrasound in Houston, Texas
Breast ultrasound at two Houston area breast centers
As part of our diagnostic breast imaging services, we provide breast ultrasound at two Houston area breast centers. An order or referral is required. Insurance, cash and Sponsored Care options are available.
Women under age 40 with a family history of breast cancer and other concerns about their personal risk should consult a trained medical professional about risk assessment and when to begin screening mammography.
What Is a breast ultrasound?
A breast ultrasound is a noninvasive imaging exam that uses sound waves to create images of breast tissue.
Unlike mammography, ultrasound does not use X-rays. It can provide additional information about a specific area of the breast and is often used as part of a diagnostic evaluation.
Your healthcare provider or breast imaging team can determine when breast ultrasound is appropriate based on your individual needs and imaging findings.
Do I need a breast ultrasound?
A breast ultrasound may be recommended when additional imaging is needed to evaluate an area of concern.
It may be used to:
- Take a closer look at an area seen on a mammogram
- Evaluate a specific breast concern
- Help distinguish between different types of breast findings
- Guide certain breast procedures when needed
Breast ultrasound is often used together with mammography or other breast imaging rather than as a replacement for those exams
Breast-specific ultrasound technology
The Rose uses high-resolution ultrasound technology designed for breast imaging.
This allows the breast imaging team to evaluate areas of concern in greater detail and, when appropriate, use ultrasound to guide certain diagnostic procedures.

Do I need an order or referral for a breast ultrasound?
Yes. An order or referral from a healthcare provider is required for breast ultrasound at The Rose.
Can I schedule a breast ultrasound directly?
No. Patients need an order or referral from a healthcare provider before scheduling a breast ultrasound at The Rose.
Where does The Rose perform breast ultrasounds?

Breast ultrasound is available at both locations. The Rose team can help you schedule at the location most convenient for you based on availability and your provider’s order.
Does The Rose accept insurance for breast ultrasound?
Yes. The Rose accepts insurance for breast health services. Coverage varies by plan, so patients should confirm their benefits with The Rose or their insurance provider before the exam.
Can uninsured patients receive a breast ultrasound at The Rose?
Yes. Uninsured patients may pay cash or may qualify for Sponsored Care based on eligibility requirements.
Do I need a mammogram before having a breast ultrasound?
Not necessarily. The appropriate imaging depends on your individual situation. Your healthcare provider or breast imaging team can determine whether a breast ultrasound is needed and whether other imaging should be performed first.
Can a breast ultrasound tell whether I have breast cancer?
A breast ultrasound can provide important diagnostic information, but it does not always provide a definitive diagnosis. If an area requires further evaluation, additional imaging or a breast biopsy may be recommended.
