Houston, TX – January 27, 2025 The Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT) has awarded The Rose a $2.5 million prevention grant as part of CPRIT’s latest funding cycle.
“This is an exceptional day for The Rose and the women we serve,” said Jessica Duckworth, Chief Operating Officer of The Rose and Principal Investigator of the grant.
CPRIT awarded six prevention grants in this cycle, with only one focused on breast cancer prevention—granted to The Rose. In this highly competitive and extensive review process, The Rose was the only community-based organization to be awarded a grant, with the other five grants going to major healthcare systems. The Rose has been a nine-time CPRIT grant recipient since 2010 and has utilized more than $11 million in CPRIT grant funds to provide access to breast cancer screenings for uninsured women throughout Southeast Texas. A third of the uninsured women served by The Rose are cared for with CPRIT funds. This funding will support essential services, including screening mammograms, diagnostic mammograms, ultrasounds, biopsies, breast MRIs, genetic testing, patient navigation to treatment, and education, which have been the cornerstone of The Rose’s mission since 1986.
“Through this grant, we’ll be able to reach approximately 55,000 people through outreach and partnerships, serving 5,200 uninsured patients with screening and follow-up diagnostics in medically underserved areas over a two-year period,” said Duckworth. “Significantly, this grant will enable The Rose to expand its breast cancer prevention services, extending its current reach from 43 counties to 45, to now include Smith and Henderson counties—bringing hope and life-saving care to even more women across Texas. Texas has the highest number of rural counties in the country, and expanding into Smith and Henderson counties allows us to reach women who may otherwise go without vital breast health services. This grant is pivotal to ensuring that every woman, regardless of her financial circumstances, has access to the care she needs.”
This expansion is vital in a state where 1 in 3 women lack access to mammography services. The grant will help The Rose bring its state-of-the-art Mobile Mammography Coaches to underserved communities, breaking down barriers to early detection and care.
