Susan G. Komen Houston® Awards Grant to The Rose

HOUSTON – The 2014 Impact Awards Luncheon prompted both raucous laughter and appreciative smiles as hundreds gathered to hear comedienne Joan Rivers’ banter and Susan G. Komen Houston® announce community grants to local recipients. Grantees included The Rose, the Houston-based nonprofit breast health organization providing care to the insured and uninsured, receiving a community grant of $261,000 for the funding of screening, diagnostics and biopsies for uninsured women.

“Many people assume that healthcare reform has meant the elimination of the ‘uninsured.’ But our partners at Susan G. Komen Houston® know that we continue to have a coverage gap in Texas and are committed to helping us ensure that our quality care will be available as long as it is needed,” said Dorothy Gibbons, Founder and CEO of The Rose.

The Rose offers a full range of screening and diagnostic services as well as navigation to treatment for those diagnosed with breast cancer. The service area includes Houston and 25 counties and is available to both the insured and uninsured. Last year, more than 34,000 patients received care and nearly 10,000 of those required some form of financial assistance. The Rose relies on funders like Susan G. Komen Houston®, individual donors and fundraisers to cover the cost of that care.

“The Roseis an extraordinary grant recipient organization that works endlessly to assist local women and men who are in great need of breast health services,” said Adriana M. Higgins, Ed. D., Executive Director of Susan G. Houston®. “Thanks to the devoted fundraisers in the Bayou City who support our fight to end breast cancer forever, we are able to fund breast health services and programs like this in the seven counties we serve.”
