Houston, TX, June 24, 2015 – Trav’lin, A Night Out at the Theater benefittingThe Rose will be held July 17 atThe Ensemble Theatre (3535 Main Street Houston, TX 77002) beginning at 6:30 pm. The second annual event will include a performance of Trav’lin, a humorous, heart-warming story of three couples playing the game of love in 1930’s Harlem.
Last year’s overwhelming success provided funds for 200 mammograms to the uninsured. Reaching this year’s goal of 300 mammograms will save the lives of even more African American women.
According toThe American Cancer Society, breast cancer is the second most common cause of cancer death among African American women. Contributing factors include late diagnosis and long intervals between mammograms. In an effort to keep this dialogue going throughout the year, Chris Noble ofThe Rose enlisted the help of Kim Roxie owner ofLamik Beauty to plan an event geared towards promoting breast health care among African American women.
“As a woman of color and the daughter of a breast cancer victim, I am absolutely committed to doing my part to work with The Rose and save lives,” said Roxie. “We have significant obligations to our families, our careers and more often than not, we serve active roles in the church. This event serves as a reminder to take the time out to celebrate and take care of ourselves.”
Of the 200 mammograms provided from last year’s fundraising four women were diagnosed with breast cancer. Ages ranged from 29 years old to 44, a strong reminder that breast cancer can happen at any age. The Rose has helped move each woman into treatment and a patient navigator will continue to walk with them throughout their journey.
“For those women who were cancer free, that one mammogram, made possible by the generosity of some many people, meant peace of mind. What a gift!” said Chris Noble. “They are on the road to making their health a priority and will look to The Rose again for a sponsored mammogram.”
The event will include a champagne reception with drinks and light bites from 6:30-8 pm, with the play starting immediately after. A dessert buffet will be served at intermission.
The Rose is very grateful to TheWindsor Village United Methodist Church for participating in the event as an underwriter. Underwriting opportunities are still available and include a mobile day for 20 uninsured African American women. Tickets are only sold in groups of three based on Me2, the unique funding model at The Rose where three insured women help cover the cost of one uninsured.
