HOUSTON, TX [September 16, 2020] – A passionate advocate for access to quality healthcare, Dr. Ann Al-Bahish had always admired The Rose’s mission to provide breast healthcare services to women regardless of their ability to pay. When board member and retired fellow law partner Theresa Einhorn introduced her to founder Dorothy Gibbons, Dr. Al-Bahish learned that the pandemic had begun to adversely impact The Rose. She explains, “When the pandemic began to impact nonprofits, including The Rose, I began providing advice and pro bono legal help to help with the mission of safely providing needed services to those at high risk in Houston. Breast cancer impacts so many women, and I want to be a part of any mission that addresses access to quality care and improves survival rates.”
Dr. Al-Bahish brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to her new role at The Rose. A partner at Haynes and Boone, LLP, Al-Bahish is an experienced attorney who has represented clients with dispute resolution in state and federal courts as well as in trials and arbitrations. She graduated with honors from Harvard Law School and has a doctorate in public health from the University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston. Al-Bahish is a founding and current board member of the nonprofit Doctors For Change, serves as Chair and Chair Emerita of the board of Healthcare for the Homeless-Houston, and is on the board of the Houston Area Women’s Center. Founder Dorothy Gibbons says, “We are thrilled and grateful to have Dr. Al-Bahish on board. She has a rare combination of knowledge and experience in public health, law, and nonprofit healthcare work. We are so pleased that she will continue to offer valuable strategic advice and contribute to The Rose’s mission.”
In addition to her work experience, Al-Bahish has a strong personal and familial connection to breast cancer and the toll it takes, both from a survivorship and a quality-of-life perspective. She lost her grandmother to metastatic breast cancer and has witnessed five maternal aunts fight breast cancer, and understands the importance of early detection, treatment, understanding family history, and other risk factors. “I am honored to join the board of The Rose, which offers the highest level of care and access regardless of income level or financial circumstances. The Rose is a valuable safety net and the first step for many in fighting a deadly disease that has killed so many of our friends and family.”
Dr. Al-Bahish is married to Anan Al-Bahish, a history buff, cook, dedicated hiking buddy, and loving father. They are proud parents to three children: Sam, a finance, math, and history student at the University of Notre Dame; Sabriah, who studies visual arts at The Cooper Union in New York City and Laith, a rising junior at Heights High School.
