PASADENA — Chevron Phillips, JPS Channel Chapter, is launching the 5th Annual PINK OUT – a month long awareness and fundraising event including a Bake Sale and silent auction as well as a chance for employees to bring out their latest pink fashions – and it’s all to benefit women served by The Rose.
Last year’s effort raised $3400 through sales of caps, t-shirts, and the auction. This year’s launch date is October 2 with a day of information sharing and pink wearing planned.
JPS Channel Chapter is a non-profit organization that Chevron Phillips supports. The Channel Chapter formed in 1951 and hosts annual fundraisers to benefit various organizations within Pasadena and neighboring communities. For 4 of the 5 years of PINK OUT, JPS has selected The Rose as the beneficiary of their efforts.
“Our organization actually meets to discuss fundraising events and opportunities each month, and one that continues to touch us all is breast cancer awareness and the annual PINK OUT events,” noted Jerusha Taylor Terry, Training and Public Relations Assistant at Chevron Phillips and chair of the PINK OUT committee.
Terry adds that while she has a leadership role, she is dependent upon contributions from fellow employees and friends such as:
- Charles Jesse Miller, Jr. – a graphic design artist, from Lake Jackson who donated his time and artwork last year for the cause, and helped bring about the highest number of t-shirt sales in the event’s history.
- Teresa Yeakley who took the lead for the auction and with the help of family members and friends expanded the selction from quilts to wreaths and a Pink Ribbon Pen designed by co-worker, Barry Buras.
- J.D. Johnson crafted a one-of-a-kind ice chest and along with his wife and fellow Chevron employee Trish Johnson donated it for use in a special drawing for employees who made donations to the cause.
“J.D. said I was the least we could do for such an outstanding fundraiser,” shared Trish. “The fact that my sister is still here today, many years later, after the cancer came back the 2nd time, is reason enough to know that without places like The Rose for women to turn to, there would be little hope. JD and I are blessed and this is just one small way to give back to those in need. We are glad we could be a small part of the success of this wonderful event!”
Terry added, “Anyone that I or any others approached were more than willing to lend a hand. This disease impacts so many. Each year, more and more employees come to me with a story about a family member going through treatments, or talking about how their lives have been impacted by this horrific cancer. After the event ends each year, employees will approach me about the next year’s event. So many, are so willing to do what they can. It’s definitely one of many fundraisers where we can see the hearts and selflessness of our CPChem family come together for the greater good. It’s a powerful experience.”
