What’s HappeningOn June 9, 2016, Senator Roy Blunt from Missouri sponsored a bill, S 3040, that would extend until 2019 the current two-year delay in implementation of U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) screening mammography recommendations.
This past January, the USPSTF finalized their recommendations which would eliminate annual mammograms for women in their 40s and allow women from age 50 to 74 a mammogram only every other year.
These recommendations defy thirty years of history, which has proven over and over again that annual mammography decreases deaths from breast cancer. One thing we know is if these recommendations are allowed to be implemented, insurance companies and health plans will no longer cover screening mammograms for women in their 40s.
At The Rose, we are committed to every woman having access to breast health care, we know the importance of annual mammograms and have seen the difference in both survival and quality of life when women had the advantage of early detection.
While Senate Bill 3040 is not necessarily a ‘fix,’ if passed, it certainly buys more time to ultimately overturn the recommendations!
The bill is currently in the Appropriations Committee so we must contact our Senators (Senator Cornyn and Senator Cruz) in Washington now!
Share your personal stories, talk about the forty year olds you love and the importance of annual mammograms. Make it clear that mammograms matter! We must convince Congress– too many lives are at stake!
