The Rose Invites Supporters to Raise Voices and Funds at “A Time to Care” Luncheon

HOUSTON, TX (February 12, 2018)– Since 1986, The Rose has championed uninsured women by enabling them to overcome barriers to quality breast healthcare such as finances and distance. Building awareness, inspiring survivors to share their stories and providing platforms to do so have made The Rose a caring community. One of the most prominent platforms is their annual “A Time to Care” Luncheon, which will be hosted at The Junior League of Houston (1811 Briar Oaks Ln, Houston, TX 77027) on April 18, 2018 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00p.m.

The Luncheon exemplifies The Rose’s commitment to promoting health and advocacy. Launched six years ago as a collaboration with local media personality Deborah Duncan, the first luncheon featured familiar female faces from local Houston media outlets sharing testimonials of their “aha moments” during personal health crises that led them to understand the importance of taking time for self care.

Each subsequent luncheon has brought together business women from all aspects of life to share around the table what “A Time to Care” means to them as they navigate the challenge of creating a work-life balance. This year’s host committee is the first to expand the table even further, as it includes men, David Holmes and Mike Eyre, working alongside emcee Melissa Wilson of FOX 26, Laura Schwinn (Luncheon Chair), Cathy Mann, Meg Watel, Stephanie Meynard, Monica Danna-Garcia, Terra Nicolay, Patricia Vega, Paige Bickley-Navarro, Pamela Lovett, Rochelle Jacobson, Anne-Laure Stephens, Beth Gillard, Sheri Parrack, Donna Mittendorf, Myrleen Knott, Ashma Khanani-Moosa, Lavonne Hopkins, Teresa Thomas, Michelle Meissner and Ronnie Hagerty.

At a time when women are finding emotional support for sharing their too-long silenced experiences, The Rose is once again assuming its familiar role of being a voice for women. “I’m so glad more women are speaking up for themselves and inspiring others to do the same. Whether it is championing access to care or finding the ability to speak up about social injustice, The Rose has always been about giving those who are normally silenced or ignored a voice and a chance to live.”” said Dorothy Gibbons, CEO and co-founder of The Rose.

This year’s inspiration and keynote address will come from Karen Walrond, an attorney, photographer, author, leadership coach and sought-after speaker on topics such as self-empowerment, creativity and innovation. Walrond is the creative mind behind the award-winning website Chookooloonks.com, an inspirational source for living with intention, creativity and adventure. She has appeared on both local and national television, as well as other news media including PBS, Huffington Post, CNN.com and The Oprah Winfrey Show.

“Karen shares the central belief that we are so passionate about at The Rose – that women need to take care of themselves, that we have a bigger purpose in this world. She talks directly to the heart of listeners and says, “You really have gifts you don’t know you have,” explains Gibbons.

Many women in the professional sphere find it impossible to carve out time in their busy schedules for prioritizing their own well being. “A Time to Care” places the focus on this struggle to illuminate how female leaders can sustain a career without ignoring their physical and emotional health.

“We know our guests are busy people who must return to offices and other demands, which is why each year we provide a tangible learning experience and meet that 1:30 p.m. deadline,” said Gibbons. “Location is also key, and we are forever grateful that Pamela Lovett of Comerica helped open the doors of the beautiful Junior League of Houston for all our luncheons.

Leading sponsors include Houston Methodist Hospital, The Jacobson Family Foundation, Comerica, MD Anderson, and Texas Citizens Bank.
